What the Vice President, Human Resources does


The Vice President, Human Resources position is key in assisting AGU to promote discovery in Earth and Space science for the benefit of humanity by being strategic and operational in focus.   The Vice President is responsible for developing and executing the people strategy in support of the overall business plan and strategic direction of AGU, specifically in the areas of talent management, organizational and performance management, employee engagement, relationship management, HR compliance, compensation, budget planning, resource planning/administration, policy administration, and coordination and negotiation of activities with internal and external clients. 


Reporting to the EVP, Finance & IT, the Vice President provides strategic leadership in accordance with the policies and practices of the organization, the ethical and social principles of business and society and the laws, regulations and administrative rulings of Federal, State and Local statutory regulations.


  • Develops, implements and maintains a people strategy for AGU to meets its strategic goals and to be considered an employer of choice
  • Coordinates this strategy with other senior staff across AGU
  • Plans, develops, organizes, implements, directs and evaluates the organization's human resources function and performance.
  • Evaluates and advises the executive team on the impact of the new programs/strategies and regulatory action as they impact the attraction, motivation, development, and retention of the people resources of AGU.
  • Designs programs that allow AGU to welcome applicants and employees of all backgrounds and to permit the development and performance of all employees in a diverse and inclusive workplace.
  • Designs and implements a comprehensive compensation and benefit plans to recruit and retain top talent
  • Oversees an agile performance management program and training for staff.
  • Provides high level counsel to AGU management around all HR-related legal concerns, including employment law and employment classifications.
  • Provides leadership for all employee relations to assess, investigate, mediate and correct issues. Assures that appropriate corrective actions are consistently administered. Counsel employees when necessary.
  • Oversees the development of curriculum and training materials for employee relations training for managers.
  • Evaluates AGU’s culture and working with the executive team provides feedback and procedural support as needed.
  • Evaluates and recommends human resource outsourcing opportunities and identify potential vendors.  Manages outsourced vendor services.
  • Promotes a culture of transparency and fairness throughout the organization. Sets a tone of leadership that is people-oriented, collaborative in nature and focused on data-based decision-making.
  • Interacts and collaborates with AGU senior team.
  • Responsible for all compliance and regulatory reporting as required by state and federal laws including the annual audit of our benefits programs.  
  • Manages the budget and other financial measures of the Human Resources Department.
  • Other duties as assigned.


What the  Vice President, Human Resources brings to the team

  • 10+ years of experience with a degree in business, human resources, social sciences or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • HR Certification (PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP) is a plus.
  • Previous experience working in a multi-state environment and a not-for-profit organization is preferred
    • Knowledge of workforce planning and employment, human resource development, compensation and benefits, risk management, employee relations, talent management, and change management. 
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local employment, wage and salary laws and regulations.
  • Ability to interpret and advise on the application of EEO/AA laws
  • Strong negotiation and conflict management skills
  • Demonstrated critical thinking and problem solving
  • Builds trust with professionalism and credibility
  • Excellent verbal skills and the ability to communicate easily and effectively with Board members and senior executives of AGU, vendor partners, and staff
  • Must be collaborative in nature, utilizing exceptional listening and facilitation skills to build effective teams, drive effective outcomes and to develop innovative solutions that meet the needs of multiple stakeholders
  • Ability to analyze and assess training and development needs.
  • Must be able to perform responsibilities with composure under the stress of deadlines/requirements for accuracy and quality and/or fast pace
  • Knowledge of computerized information systems used in human resources applications. Strong knowledge of MS Office is required.
  • Ability to travel
