What the Senior Specialist does

The Senior Specialist, Public Affairs advances the interests of AGU, its members, and its sciences by promoting the organization and Earth and space science to U.S. Congress and the Administration and by engaging AGU members in science policy events and activities. The incumbent in this role works on development of strategic relationships with key U.S. congressional and administration staff members and offices and utilizes those relationships to advance AGU policy goals.

Reporting to the Public Affairs Director, the Senior Specialist collaborates closely with the other members of the Public Affairs team and AGU staff.

* Establishes and maintains relationships with Congress and the Administration to further AGU policy goals.
* Remains up to date on current federal legislation and budgets related to AGU sciences and uses that knowledge to further legislative strategy.
* Plans, develops, and implements lobbying strategies for policy issues relevant to Earth and space science and AGU members.
* Works closely and effectively with the entire Public Affairs team on achieving its strategic goals.
* Develops materials to inform policy makers about key science policy issues.
* Attends and helps to organize policy activities such as hearings, congressional briefings, and other Hill activities, and conducts extensive work on Congressional Visits Days and Hill strategy and targeting.
* Critically identifies and analyzes policy documents relevant to AGU and its members and assists in developing advocacy strategies in anticipation or response.
* Works with AGU members to inform and engage them in science policy activities.
* Implements, promotes, and improves AGU programs such as science policy events at Fall Meeting, the AGU Voices for Science Program, AGU Congressional Visits Days, and the AGU Congressional Science Fellowship program.
* Works with outside organizations to develop key partnerships to advance AGU strategic policy goals.
* Takes part in workshops and makes oral presentations with AGU and outside audiences about relevant science policy topics.
* Engages AGU leadership and members in science policy through events, action alerts, and online resources.
* Assists in maintaining AGU’s science policy presence and information through the AGU website, social media,, the AGU Action Center, AGU Science Policy Alerts, The Bridge Blog, and direct emails.
* Other duties as assigned.

What the Senior Specialist brings to the team

* Bachelor’s degree in science, political science, public policy, or related discipline with 4-5 years of experience.
* Previous experience working in a membership organization environment is preferred.
* Ability to read, interpret, analyze, and apply legislation to AGU policy priorities, and make good decisions without direct daily oversight.
* Ability to understand scientific publications.
* Excellent analytical skills.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to communicate easily and effectively with both internal and external audiences.
* Willingness to develop relationships with policy makers, scientists, and other stakeholders.
* Ability to perform responsibilities with composure, accuracy, and quality under the stress of deadlines and/or fast pace.
* Good organizational skills with attention to detail.
* Ability to think creatively and act proactively to seek opportunities for advancing AGU goals.
* Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
* Demonstrated interest in science policy issues.
* Must enjoy working effectively as part of a team.
* Demonstrated high level of initiative.
* Ability to assist with follow through on commitments and accept ownership of responsibilities and with utmost professionalism.
* Strong personal computer skills, Microsoft Office Suite and intranet is a must.
* Ability to travel.
