What the Program Manager, Strategic Communications does

The Program Manager, Strategic Communications plays an essential role in the execution and management of a communications program designed to expand AGU’s reputation as an authoritative voice for the Earth and space sciences.

Using communications expertise and sound judgment, the Program Manager, Strategic Communications develops and procures engaging, informative, and consistent content that informs and educates the media, public policy makers, the general public, and other targeted audiences, including AGU members, on a variety of issues related to the organization’s programs and strategic goals.

This position is involved in a diverse portfolio of projects across the organization, and as such, requires a communications generalist who possesses the combined skills of a writer, editor, facilitator, and project manager, and who is able to both exercise independent judgment and successfully work as part of an integrated team. This position reports to the Manager, Strategic Communications.

* Develops engaging, informative, and consistent messaging and content related to AGU’s programs and strategic goals for both internal and external audiences. This includes, but is not limited to press releases, letters to the editor, talking points, fact sheets, web-based and e-newsletter stories, blog posts, Tweets, videos, etc. This also includes contributing to the development of strategic communications plans for a variety of projects and initiatives.
* Works with and, as needed, directs others in developing and editing content designed to meet specific program and audience needs.
* Provides communications counsel to staff throughout the organization, ensuring that all communication approaches are aligned with AGU’s objectives and priorities. This will include working independently and/or as part of a team to identify optimal delivery methods for content (text, video, social media, etc., or a combination of sources).
* Integrates content across channels to maximize the impact of AGU’s programs and initiatives.
* Contributes to the execution and management of an active media program, including pitching stories to and responding to inquiries from the press, prepping spokespeople, and building and maintaining relationships with appropriate members of the media.
* Establishes proactive relationships with key staff, both inside and outside of the Marketing, Communications and Digital Media department, to assist in the gathering, development and management of content.
* Tracks audience engagement, including media coverage, and generates regular reports to help analyze and assess the effectiveness of a particular message, piece of content or program.
* Participates in the planning and execution of communications training for AGU members.
* Drafts speeches, presentations, and other supporting communication materials for AGU executive and volunteer leadership.
* Hires and supervises strategic communications interns.
* Keeps current with emerging online/digital and communications technologies.
* Other duties as assigned.

What the Program Manager, Strategic Communications brings to the team

* 6+ years of experience with a Bachelor’s Degree in public relations, communications, or a related field; or equivalent education and work experience.
* Experience in a membership association/not-for-profit and/or scientific or technical organization preferred.
* Exceptional analytical, research, writing, organizational, project management, and communications skills. Should include experience with a variety of communications channels, including, websites, e-newsletters, and social media.
* Ability to handle complex technical information and prioritize assignments, set goals, and work independently, as well as in a group.
* Ability to synthesize information from a variety of sources and develop clear, concise messages that support and contribute to the organization’s strategic goals.
* Solid interpersonal and teamwork skills, and experience in seeking input from across the organization and implementing plans in concert with other departments.
* Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, both independently and as part of a team, in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment, as well as multi-task and set priorities in a flexible manner to address changing needs.
* Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft suite of products, including Excel and Word. Must be able to learn and effectively use: a Web content management system (experience with WordPress preferred), a web-based system for management of media contacts, distribution of press releases, and tracking/reporting news coverage (experience with Vocus a plus), and a variety of social media platforms, including but not limited to LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, and YouTube.
* Ability to exercising highest level of discretion on both internal and external confidential matters.
* Ability to travel.
