What the Program Manager, Mentoring and Career Programs does
The Program Manager, Mentoring and Career Programs position is key in assisting AGU to promote discovery in Earth and Space science for the benefit of humanity by being operational in focus. The purpose of this position is to lead the operations and planning of AGU Mentoring and Career Programs activities. The incumbent, in conjunction with additional AGU Talent Pool staff, will manage the execution and optimization of existing AGU mentoring and career programs, and will lead the development, promotion and implementation of new initiatives, and additional affiliation and engagement opportunities for AGU student, early career scientists, and job seeker populations year-round.
- Serves as the program manager for existing AGU mentoring and career programs, including Mentoring 365, AGU Mentoring Network, AGU Career programs and student and early career support.
- Serves as program manager for development and implementation of new AGU mentoring and career programs initiatives.
- Serves as the primary AGU liaison for partner societies in Mentoring365. Manages relationships with partners including updating of MOUs, onboarding, meetings, and assessments. Works with the Assistant Director, Grants and Education Programs to identify and market Mentoring365 partnership to potential strategic partners.
- Manages the AGU Mentoring Network and Macelwane Early Career and Student Breakfast in conjunction with the Mentoring Subcommittee of the AGU College of Fellows.
- Manages budgets for mentoring and careers programs.
- Works with AGU Development and the Assistant Director, Grants and Education Programs to scope new funding opportunities for Talent Pool programs.
- Works with Marketing and Communications to promote programs and to coordinate product/service alignment.
- Ensures effective planning and execution of all mentoring and career programs related activities at AGU meetings, including the career center and careers workshops. Works with others in Talent Pool and AGU to ensure coordination of meetings’ programming with other programs and departments to meet attendees’ needs and avoid duplication of efforts.
- Identifies linkages and builds programming in alignment with AGU’s Strategic Plan. Serves on enterprise-wide, cross-functional teams as representative for Talent Pool programs.
- Manages relationships with software vendors for mentoring and career programs.
- Builds engagement journeys for mentoring and career programs participants across AGU programs.
- Serves as the primary person to coordinate and execute on student and early career support oversight.
- Assists in managing interns and temporary employees as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
What the Program Manager, Mentoring and Career Programs brings to the team
- 6+ years with BS/BA; MS/MA is preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Working knowledge of current hiring processes and best practices in the promotion of diversity, inclusion and equity.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to communicate easily and effectively with both internal and external audiences.
- Demonstrated program management skills and success in leading programmatic activities to successful completion.
- Demonstrated ability to manage projects, budgets and coordination of roles and responsibilities among project teams.
- Strong computer skills to include word processing, spreadsheet, and data analysis software.
- Ability to interpret, analyze, organize and apply program policies, and make good decisions without direct daily oversight.
- Experience with an association management system (i.e. netForum), web-conference management software (i.e. Zoom, Microsoft Teams), a learning management system (LMS), and a website content procurement preferred.
- Demonstrated training facilitation skills (training, workshops, and group meetings).
- Strong public speaking skills.
- Demonstrated customer service skills.
- Strong demonstrated leadership skills including track record of managing projects from kickoff through completion, and budget control.
- Excellent change management and presentation skills.
- Ability to facilitate meetings efficiently, effectively, and independently.

- Ability to follow through on commitments and accept ownership of responsibilities and with utmost professionalism.
- Demonstrated customer service skills.
- Demonstrated skills at leading planning and execution of large-scale programmatic events a must; employment experience in a membership-facing organization strongly preferred.
