What the Program Manager does

The Thriving Earth Exchange is an AGU Strategic Initiative that leverages Earth and space science for societal benefit. Thriving Earth Exchange helps community leaders and scientists work together to use Science to advance local priorities related to sustainability, resilience, and environmental justice.

The Program Manager, Community Leader Engagement/Thriving Earth Exchange will ensure the design, launch, and completion of Thriving Earth Exchange projects in a diverse range of communities by recruiting, onboarding, and supporting community leads to participate in the Thriving Earth Program.

In addition, the incumbent in this role will lead the development, testing, and implementation of new resources and processes that improve the capacity of project teams to accomplish project objectives, affect positive local policies and decisions, and enhance public use of and support for science.

* Manages Thriving Earth Exchange’s programs and partnerships with community serving organizations.
* Leads the development of strong regional networks that support community science and local community science projects.
* Ensures Thriving Earth Exchange has a growing number of communities to work with, including communities that represent groups that have been historically marginalized or underserved by science.
* Prepares and supports community leads to succeed in Thriving Earth Exchange and accomplish program goals.
* Fosters a community of practice among community leads.
* Develops and maintains relationships with resource partners to support community leads throughout their involvement in Thriving Earth Exchange.
* Participates in Thriving Earth Exchange Community Science Fellows’ recruiting, matching, and training, especially the parts that are relevant to communities.
* Works closely with the Thriving Earth Exchange team to incorporate new learning and materials into regular program offerings.
* Participates in program-wide efforts to identify, implement, and revise strategies to scale Thriving Earth Exchange.
* Represents Thriving Earth Exchange, both in writing and speaking, both formally and informally in scientific and community-oriented forums and use that broad engagement to develop new strategic partners.
* Participates in regular program evaluation and improvement.
* Other duties as assigned.

What the Program Manager brings to the team
* 5+ years of experience with a Bachelor’s Degree, or equivalent education and work experience.
* Experience in Community Engagement.
* Experiencing coaching and mentoring.
* Experience in leading community inspired science projects that produce local impact.
* Experience in science engagement and/or science policy.
* Experience developing and implementing programs that engage volunteers, offer training, and build collaborative networks.
* Demonstrated skills using science in working with diverse communities.
* Broad knowledge of AGU science and a strong foundation in applied or use-inspired research.
* Ability to manage organizational partnerships and work with partners
* Experience in project management and volunteer engagement
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to communicate effectively and culturally appropriately with people from many backgrounds and in many contexts, including great listening skills as well as the ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
* Ability to interpret and apply program policies and make good decisions without direct daily oversight.
* Ability to follow through on commitments and accept ownership of responsibilities and with utmost professionalism.
* Must be able to perform responsibilities with composure under the stress of deadlines/requirements for accuracy and quality and/or fast pace.
* Ability to exercise highest level of discretion on both internal and external confidential matters.
* Knowledge of Spanish or a second language, highly desired.
