What the Manager, Digital Content does

AGU is recognized as an innovator among scientific organizations and a world leader in advancing Earth and space science. The organization is striving to make two big shifts: 1) evolving from a traditional function-based organization become a collaborative and deeply ‘matrixed’ organization, and 2) moving from a program-focused operational model to a user-focused service model with an emphasis on creating a consistent and unified experience of AGU for all stakeholders. To accomplish this, AGU is undergoing a multiyear digital transformation initiative (DTI) to transform how we work and interact with our community.

As a part of these efforts, the Manager, Digital Content is responsible for creating, managing and nurturing online content that educates and engages users in AGU’s various communities. This is a key position in the AGU Strategic Communications department, responsible for ensuring that all content is delivered in a manner consistent with the organization’s strategic goals, objectives and messaging. In addition to writing, editing and producing AGU content, this position includes coordinating digital projects across the organization’s departments and working to build consensus between departments.

Reporting to the Director, Strategic Communications, Outreach and Digital Engagement, this position serves as a core member of the DTI team.

* Oversees and personally executes on the creation, development and management of consistent and appropriate content for digital platforms, ensuring that content is meeting the needs of the organization’s various audiences and is consistent with AGU’s voice, style and messaging frameworks.
* Proofreads online/digital content for style and substance, including optimizing copy for search; overseeing and enforcing content brand, voice and style guidelines.
* Works independently, and as part of a team, to identify optimal user engagement paths and delivery methods for content (text, video, social media, etc., or a combination of sources).
* Collaborates with staff at all levels of the organization.
* Leads development, implementation and management of the workflows for content lifecycle processes. This includes but not limited to acquisition, creation, review and approval, publication, assessment and updating/addition/removal initiatives. Coordinates digital projects across departments.
* Partners with the Director, Strategic Communications, Outreach and Digital Engagement in on-going development and implementation of the Content Strategy, a cornerstone of the DTI project.
* Represents the Director on DTI related matters in her absence or on her behalf.
* Other duties as assigned.

What the Manager, Digital Content brings to the team

* 8+ years of experience managing and developing content for websites, social media and other online/digital platforms, with a Bachelor’s Degree in communications, journalism, English or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
* Experience in using content management tools to create and maintain compelling content on an ongoing basis.
* Prior digital transformation experience highly desirable; experience with enterprise platforms is also desirable. Experience with SiteCore is a strong plus.
* Experience with social media marketing tools is a plus.
* Excellent verbal and written communications skills, including proofreading/editing skills. Ability to communicate and interact easily and effectively with staff at all levels, as well as AGU leaders, freelancers, vendors, scientists, and researchers.
* Ability to manage multiple priorities and work well under deadline pressure.
* Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft suite of products, including Excel and Word, as well as Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign. Experience with WordPress, HTML, and Photoshop is desirable.
* Ability to translate strategy, independently prioritize work, and ensure that staff and financial resources are well invested.
* Confidence and motivation to operate independently.
* Strong organizational skills, as well as attention to detail and ability to manage complexity.
* Ability to travel.
* Proven ability to build consensus and effectively lead a cross-departmental team.
* Exceptional project management skills. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment.
