What the Interim Director/Editor in Chief, Eos does

AGU is recognized as an innovator among scientific organizations and a world leader in advancing Earth and space sciences. We strive to lead - pioneering new ways to grow the exchange of scientific knowledge, encouraging the emergence of new and transdisciplinary fields of study, evolving our programs and operations as we anticipate the changing needs and expectations of our global community, and leveraging our science to help society.
Eos has provided value to AGU throughout its nearly 100-year history. In 2014 Eos was relaunched as an open, digital-first source of Earth and space science news and perspectives accompanied by a full- color, print magazine for members. The relaunch was very successful, and Eos has grown in stature, reach, and impact.
The long-time Director/Editor in Chief is leaving AGU in early June, and an Interim Director/Editor in Chief (EiC) is sought for a transition that is expected to conclude at the end of 2018. The Interim Director/EiC will ensure that Eos continues to fulfill its mission to serve as the primary source of Earth and space science news, information, and perspectives for the worldwide Earth and space science community. The Interim EiC liaisons with and guides the Eos Editors and the volunteer Editorial Advisory Board, and oversees three primary staff functions--News, Scientific Content, and Production. In addition, the Interim EiC manages hiring, mentoring, coaching, and evaluation processes for a staff of seven and provides budget and administrative oversight.

* Oversees all aspects of Eos (digital experience, print magazine, and byproducts).
- Creates and updates an editorial plan and manages the overall content schedule with an eye to ensuring that major events and issues are considered for coverage.
- Performs a high-level quality-control function to ensure that Eos content is shaped and expressed in ways that will achieve the desired impact and impression on readers and site users.
* Consults and advises on news coverage plans and priorities and helps to identify news gaps, opportunities, and sources.
* Consults and advises on features and special projects of Eos.
* Oversees production to ensure that the website and the Eos magazine are produced well, are aesthetically pleasing and readable, and are on time and on budget.
* Reviews and vets scientific submissions, oversees the scientific review of manuscripts, and evaluates the decisions of the Editors.
* Consults with the Production team and other staff on plans for magazine production, including identifying stories for feature treatment. Participates in review of magazine proofs.
* Ensures smooth workflow for Research Spotlights and AGU News articles.
* Oversees the status and assignment of freelance editors and writers to ensure they are being fully utilized; negotiates contracts with freelancers.
* Directs the management of the GEMS publishing system by reviewing the status of submissions, coaching on communications with authors, and approving the prioritization of the workload. Directs invitations for tributes and other duties.
* Leads acquisition of opinion pieces and the development of series or special articles by collaborating with others and by researching, identifying, and cultivating relationships with established thought leaders and emerging leaders across the sciences AGU represents as well as those in areas of policy, communications, funding, and applied fields. Pursues prospects for opinion pieces and scientific content.
* Supervises staff and manages hiring, mentoring, coaching, and evaluation processes. Identifies needs and opportunities for staff development and skills-building and provides appropriate training and development opportunities; for example, in science journalism, science writing, digital culture, and tools.
* Manages relationships across the Earth and space science community to grow Eos’s reputation and contributor base as well as reaching out to the target markets for Eos concerning content.
* Leads recruiting and selection of the Eos Editors (leading scientists who are compensated for this role) and the companion volunteer editorial advisory board to ensure their full engagement and contribution. Represents Eos by at EiC meetings and other gatherings.
* Manages key internal relationships with teams with which Eos collaborates closely: Branding & Design, Publications, Public Information, Social Media, Strategic Communications, and Marketing teams.
* Serves in a leadership role within the Editorial Center, a staff group that collaborates to develop and promote content and campaigns across AGU digital platforms and communications channels.
* Oversees and is accountable for the Eos budget. Reviews recommendations from staff finalizes budget presented for SVP’s approval, regularly tracks budget, and makes changes as needed. Approves invoices and contracts.
* Other duties as assigned.

What the Interim Director/Editor in Chief, Eos brings to the team

* 10+ years professional editorial experience with Bachelor’s degree; 8+ years with Master’s degree in journalism, science, or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
* Senior level management experience in a science news, science media, or science publishing organization, with significant responsibility for news or editorial content.
* Experience managing change and developing staff.
* Experience developing and overseeing an expense budget.
* Record of success identifying, recruiting, developing, coaching, and managing editorial, news, and production staff.
* Strong understanding of the challenges and opportunities in a digital-first news environment.
* Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communications skills; advanced ability to adapt communications to the audience.
* Demonstrated ability to convey complex ideas and high-level science through effective writing, editing, and storytelling.
* Knowledge of Earth and space sciences and their impact.
* Familiarity with social media, taxonomy, tagging standards, search engine optimization, and analytics as they relate to news and to science publishing.
* Working knowledge of the broad news and information marketplace as well as the science news marketplace.
* Effective and reliable collaborator and partner.
* Strong listening, coaching, and communications skills.
* Ability to multitask under the pressing deadlines.
* Ability to work effectively and accurately in a fast-paced environment.
* Excellent ability to juggle multiple priorities and be highly flexible and nimble.
* Ability to exercise highest level of discretion on both internal and external confidential matters, and to maintain high level of confidentiality, included but not limited to strategic planning initiatives, contracts, budgeting, and personnel matters.
* Ability to budget and monitor budget.
* Experience and in-depth knowledge of computer software and demonstrated proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
* Ability to travel.
