What the Graphic Designer does

The Graphic Designer conceptualizes, designs, executes, and effectively communicates the strategic intent for high-quality creative solutions that consistently and clearly communicate AGU’s brand identity, vision and values, and messaging to a variety of critical target audiences. Presenting a dynamic, vibrant and consistent visual identity and language across the organization’s programs and projects is core to AGU’s overall success and advancement.
This strategic, conceptual thinker will have a wide range of design capabilities and experience, with a background in visual communications, print, digital, branding, and typography.

Reporting to the Assistant Director, Design & Branding, the Graphic Designer will work collaboratively with other members of creative design and marketing teams.

* Creates designs for marketing materials, events, web properties, social media, and other visual assets to support AGU’s goals, programs, and initiatives.
* Researches, develops, and designs magazine spreads, covers, in-house advertising, and web assets for Eos, AGU’s award-winning monthly news magazine, adhering to established production standards, schedules, deadlines, and budgets.
* Works collaboratively and openly with the Marketing team on projects, ensuring that all work meets programmatic goals while following AGU’s brand standards.
* Researches and secures appropriate imagery and other graphic elements to enhance design projects and complement messaging and content.
* Corresponds with stock photo agencies, freelance photographers, and editors to purchase rights for images.
* Presents design work at various stages for review, feedback, and approval.
* Maintains and safeguards the integrity of AGU’s brand identity across the organization.
* Ensures creative assets and files are organized and catalogued in a timely manner
* Keeps abreast of latest trends and applications in design.
* Other duties as assigned.

What the Graphic Designer brings to the team

* Bachelor’s degree in graphic design or related discipline with minimum of 3 years of experience in branding, print and digital design, working within an in-house creative department or other creative team environment.
* Experience in a media, publishing, in-house creative, or design agency strongly preferred.
* Demonstrated ability to convey ideas through imagery and design, and to support the achievement of key marketing and communications goals.
* Ability to manage multiple complex projects at the same time on a tight deadline
* Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills, and attention to detail a must.
* Strong verbal and written communications skills, as well as solid presentation and listening skills.
* Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate and interact easily and effectively with staff, AGU leaders, freelancers, vendors, scientists, and researchers.
* Solution-oriented and passionate about visual design.
* Ability to excel in a highly collaborative, fast-paced environment. Confidence and motivation to operate independently also a must.
* Demonstrated proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Acrobat, as well as the Microsoft suite of products.
* Experience creating video graphics using Adobe After Effects a plus.
* Ability to travel.
