PURPOSE OF POSITION

The Executive Vice President, Finance and Information Technology position is key in assisting AGU in promoting discovery and solutions in Earth and space sciences for the benefit of humanity by being strategic in focus.

Reporting directly to the Executive Director/CEO, and in collaboration with AGU executive management team, the EVP proactively participates in the leadership of AGU as a whole, with an emphasis on maintaining the financial health of the organization, safeguarding and effectively using AGU’s financial assets in support of the organization’s strategic priorities, and ensuring that AGU’s information technology and digital capabilities guarantee the best possible online presence and service to AGU’s external and internal customers.

As a member of the AGU executive management team, the EVP is accountable and has ultimate responsibility and authority for strategic development, strategic implementation, and cost -effective management of AGU’s finances and technical operations.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
* Serves as a strategic counsel and partner to the ED/CEO on matters related to financial and technological operations, ensuring their alignment with AGU’s mission and strategic plan.
o Develops and recommends the financial and technical operations strategies of the organization.
o Continually investigates and introduces process improvements measures and presents suggestions to the ED/CEO for consideration.
o Supports the ED/CEO in reporting to and working with the Board of Directors
(Board), and AGU Finance and Investment Committee and Audit Committee.
o Participates in the strategic planning process as a member of the executive team and develops the annual operations and financial strategy for assuring success of its execution, including the setting of annual operational priorities to achieve strategic goals of AGU.
o Ensures accountability and tracks progress against annual goals.

* Provides Financial Leadership to AGU
o Monitors financial indicators throughout the year and advises the executive leadership team regarding any emerging fiscal issues.
o Oversees long and short-term planning through the analysis of financial requirements and the preparation of budgets, forecasts, and scenario planning.
o Responsible for cash flow management, including daily cash management, bond compliance, financing, and management of banking and legal relationships.
o Responsible for risk management and insurance company relationships.
o Oversees AGU’s investment portfolio in consultation with the Finance and Investment Committee and investment advisor, including alignment with the
investment policy, ensuring sufficient financial stability for the organization, and serves as primary contact to investment advisory firm.
o Directs the treasury function, credit lines, working capital, and execute short-term and long-term investments.
o Owns the relationships with lending institutions and broader financial community.
o Identifies and recommends a business development strategy so the organization can pursue new revenue generating programs.

* Provides strategic leadership to finance, IT and digital innovation departments through alignment of departmental operational plans with the AGU’s strategic and business plans.
o Ensures all parts of these departments are well managed, staffed, and aligned to operate as effectively as possible.
o Responsible for overall leadership and management for IT and digital innovation operations, ensuring systems and products meet the operational needs of internal and external stakeholders.
o Responsible for strategic leadership and development of the finance department and its staff.
o Builds a culture focused on results and accountability across finance and information technology departments, so that organizational objectives and defined goals are accomplished and celebrated.

QUALIFICATIONS:
* Extensive knowledge of financial principles and practices in nonprofit individual membership organizations.
* Demonstrated leadership in planning and operations management.
* Excellent verbal skills and the ability to communicate easily and effectively with scientists and senior executives of AGU, vendor partners, and staff.
* Skilled ability to provide business needs analysis and strategic planning with senior leaders.
* Demonstration of a strong record of personal and organizational achievement with bottom line accountability.

EXPERIENCE:
* 15+ years of experience with a master’s degree in business, finance, management or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
* Minimum of 5 years of leadership experience at a senior management level is a must.
* Experience managing a diverse staff, accounting operations, investments, audit compliance, budgeting & forecasting, financial reporting, internal controls, tax issues, contract negotiation and life cycle, and professional partner relationships.
* Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification strongly preferred.
* Previous experience working in a membership organization environment preferred.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:
* Repetitive motion, substantial movements of the wrist, hands, and fingers.
* Walking and standing occasionally required, sitting a majority of the time.
* Ability to use computer screen and/or read for extensive periods of time.
* Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling of up to 10 lbs.
* Extended working hours and travel (10%) may be necessary.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Until the AGU building is open, the position is performed offsite. Once the building has reopened, the position will be performed in a typical office environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
