What the Executive Program Manager, Centennial does

The Executive Program Manager, Centennial is key in assisting AGU to promote discovery in Earth and space science for the benefit of humanity by being operational in focus. The Executive Program Manager, Centennial will be responsible for directly managing strategic components of the centennial portfolio and coordinating all other activities related to AGU’s centennial programs. AGU turns 100 in 2019 and is celebrating with worldwide member and partner engagement, a series of scientific programming events and activities, creating a storytelling portfolio, and more activities that showcase the value of science. The incumbent will need broad communication and project coordination skills to work across the diverse portfolio of projects surrounding the centennial.

Reporting to the Director, Centennial & Strategic Programs, the Executive Program Manager, Centennial will serve as a strategic liaison to AGU members, internal staff, and partners to manage several specific programs in the centennial portfolio. The incumbent will work with AGU staff and AGU members and partners to help manage and frame programs to match the centennial goals of showing the value of Earth and space science. With so many initiatives underway, it is critical to have an Executive Program Manager who can see the pieces and help pull together the whole puzzle of the centennial. The work will involve outreach inside and outside of the scientific membership community.
This is a two-year term temporary position.

* Leads programs and relationships within and outside of AGU related to the 100th anniversary of AGU.
* Communicates, interacts and supports major centennial programs with partnering AGU departments and partners, including volunteer leaders.
* Directly manages several of these programs, which could potentially include: partner and member engagement programs, special publications, web outreach and programs emerging from this, a member grant program, AGU’s policy initiatives, AGU’s oral history and storytelling program, content programming, and other programming as they arise.
* Works closely with centennial team (Director, Centennial Program Coordinator, Partnership lead, Project Manager, Centennial Communications Program Manager) and closely affiliated teams: strategic communications, editorial center, and social scrums. Work could potentially cross all AGU departments.
* Provides strategic guidance to all committees and subject-matter experts who will be contributing to centennial efforts including relationship-building, agenda and deadline creation for meetings, and meetings outcomes.
* Guides centennial content plan; creates applicable content out of programmatic work that supports AGU’s content plan.
* Curates content from other sources that show the value of Earth and space science.
* Manages program budget as appropriate and works with Director on budgeting across the centennial program portfolio.
* Supervises work of the Centennial Program Coordinator and serves as a resource to her/him.
* Supports the Director, Centennial & Strategic Programs and other members of the Senior Leadership on special projects.
* Other duties as assigned.

What the Executive Program Manager, Centennial brings to the team

* 6+ years of experience with a Bachelor’s Degree in business, communications, or a related field; or equivalent education and work experience.
* Previous management experience, with demonstrated responsibility for strategy and innovation.
* Ability to translate strategic intent into a program plans and tactics.
* Experience in managing a budget and demonstrated ability to work within approved budget.
* Advanced experience in research and program administration.
* Experience in planning, organizing and problem-solving to complete multiple deadline-driven projects efficiently and on time.
* Experience in an association/not-for-profit and/or scientific organization preferred.
* Degree in Earth and space science or another scientific field preferred.
* Ability to communicate effectively at all levels including staff, senior management, members of the Board of Directors, and outside organizations.
* Excellent communication skills (with a high degree of diplomacy) are essential, as is excellent follow-through on tasks.
* Confidence and motivation to operate with independence and to take part in leadership efforts as needed.
* Demonstrated ability to translate strategic intent into a program plans and tactics.
* Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to function under demanding situations and deadlines, while demonstrating solid judgment.
* Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work cooperatively with others.
* Strong time management and organizational skills, as well as attention to detail and ability to manage complex logistics.
* Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft suite of products, including PowerPoint, Excel, and Word; experience with WordPress, HTML, and Photoshop is desirable.
* Highly motivated with the ability to work independently and use good judgment in identifying and executing solutions.
* Ability to multitask in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
* Ability to exercise highest level of discretion on both internal and external confidential matters.
* Ability to travel.
