What the Director, PMO does

The Director, Project Management Office (PMO) position is key in assisting AGU to accomplish its mission of promoting discovery in Earth and Space science for the benefit of humanity by being both strategic and operational in focus.

The purpose of this position is to lead the operations of the PMO, which focuses on projects executed within the organization, by introducing and developing project management standards, including tools and techniques; developing processes that increase visibility across the department’s projects portfolio; and providing administrative and project management support to include training, mentoring, and coaching of Project Managers.

The Director, PMO provides leadership, strategic direction, and management for the PMO programs and related activities.

* Aligns the PMO strategic and operational plans with AGU’s business plan.
* Strategically identifies projects and programs throughout AGU which the PMO will support.
* Collaborating with other department leaders to define, prioritize, and develop projects.
* Plans, develops, organizes, implements, directs, and evaluates the PMO department.
* Develops and implements an organizational reporting system which notifies management of progress on goals and informs organizational decisions on resource allocations.
* Facilitate process flow design and mapping across departments to create organizational efficiency.
* Establishes industry standard processes and techniques for scoping/requirements gathering and project management, including best practices in change management.
* Leads, trains, mentors, and coaches project managers within the PMO and across AGU.
* Oversees development of RFPs and vendor selection process.
* Responsible for the budget of the PMO department.
* Other duties as assigned.
What the Director, PMO brings to the team
* 10+ years program/project management experience with Bachelor’s degree; or 8+ years with Master’s degree in business, information systems or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
* Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification is required; Scrum and/or Six Sigma credentials preferred.
* Previous supervisory experience is preferred.
* Experience in vendor/consultant management preferred.
* Previous experience working in a membership organization environment preferred.
* Strong project management acumen, with excellent grasp of program management methodologies including project risk management.
* Excellent analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills, as well as a demonstrated ability to simultaneously control numerous projects.
* Capacity to anticipate, comprehend and manage project dependencies across other initiatives in the organization.
* Ability to provide technical leadership and guidance of traditional and Agile project management frameworks.
* Demonstrated success managing large scale programs/projects end-to-end.
* Strong leadership skills and the ability to communicate easily and effectively with technical and non-technical audiences, including scientists and senior executives of AGU, vendor partners, and staff.
* Ability to sell ideas and use strong diplomatic skills in conjunction with communication abilities.
* Must be collaborative in nature, utilizing exceptional listening and facilitation skills to build effective teams, drive effective outcomes and develop innovative solutions that meet the needs of multiple stakeholders.
* Ability to plan, organize, train, evaluate, and direct work of assigned staff.
* Understanding of databases and project management software is a must.
* Report preparation and research skills.
* Excellent time management skills and ability to multitask.
* Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and anticipate the needs of a changing landscape.
* Ability to exercising highest level of discretion and sensitivity on both internal and external confidential matters.
* Ability to travel.
