What the Associate Editor, Eos does

Eos is the news magazine of AGU. The publication works with journalists and science writers to report daily on innovative Earth and space science results, produces in-depth features on research tends in the geosciences, and also works with scientist authors to provide unique, behind-the-scenes perspectives on how they answer the most fascinating questions about the way our world works.

The Associate Editor is key in supporting the Managing Editor with developing daily science news and assisting the Eos production team with the print and digital editions. This position is temporarily remote during the COVID-19 pandemic but will be expected to work onsite in Washington, DC once conditions allow.

* This position reports to the Manager, Eos News and Features Editor (Managing Editor).
* Works closely with staff and freelance writers as they prepare news and feature manuscripts for Eos.
* Generates story ideas and coordinates with the Managing Editor to prioritize coverage.
* Reviews pitches and assigns stories to writers. Provides guidance on content and writing style and enforces Eos’s high standards of journalism.
* Cultivates a cohort of regular freelance journalists and science writers to ensure Eos publishes work from a diverse, professional, and international pool of writers.
* Works with editorial team to develop and produce long-lead coverage.
* Vets and selects images for news articles and works with Eos’s production team to ensure proper credit and rights clearance.
* Uses WordPress to publish articles on Eos.org.
* Supports the production team and the Editor in Chief in producing the monthly print magazine, including pulling and finalizing manuscripts, communicating with authors selected for print, providing input on design, among other tasks.
* Identifies articles for weekly inclusion in the Eos Buzz newsletter.
* Assists the Managing Editor with the coordination of and payments to contract/freelance copyeditors, writers, and other vendors.
* Attends twice-monthly AGU-wide editorial meetings and occasionally works with other AGU departments to produce articles and promote awareness of aligned Eos content.
* Performs high-level quality control to ensure that Eos content is shaped and expressed in ways that will achieve the desired impact and impression on readers and users.
* Contributes to Eos social media presence by promoting articles and engaging with Eos’s active following.
* Other duties as assigned.

What the Associate Editor, Eos brings to the team

* 6+ years of experience in journalism, science, or related field required media, with a Bachelor’s Degree; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
* A familiarity with science and science news. Specific knowledge of the Earth and space sciences and their impact is highly desirable.
* Experience and in-depth knowledge of computer software and demonstrated proficiency with Office 360 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
* Experience operating in a digital-first news environment, understanding of content management and workflows.
* Mid-level editor with ability to thoughtfully guide and rewrite news articles.
* Demonstrated ability to convey complex ideas and technical language through effective, creative, and lively writing, editing, and storytelling.
* Excellent eye for detail and a good nose for news and news strategy.
* Excellent ability to make scientific content relatable and compelling to public audiences.
* Excellent ability to juggle multiple priorities and be highly flexible and nimble while meeting tight publication deadlines and requirements.
* Media-savvy, knowledgeable of the broad news and information marketplace as well as the science news marketplace.
* Proficiency with content management systems such as WordPress, expertise with basic software such as Office360, and an ability to quickly learn new systems such as project management applications and print production workflows.
* Knowledge of the broad news and information marketplace as well as the science news marketplace and current practices.
* Strong listening, coaching, and communication skills.
* Effective and reliable teammate, working collaboratively with diverse people at a variety of levels to elicit top-notch journalism.
* Knowledge of taxonomy, tagging, and search engine optimization.
* Ability to exercise highest level of discretion on internal and external confidential matters and to maintain high level of confidentiality, included but not limited to strategic planning initiatives, contracts, budgeting, and personnel matters.
* Demonstrated ability to recruit high-quality contributors and to network and collaborate to grow content and its impact.
* Ability to travel. (Note: This position requires no travel during the COVID-19 pandemic.)
