What the Senior Specialist/Writer does

AGU’s public information team identifies and disseminates newsworthy Earth and space science research findings to the press and public through press releases, blog posts and social media. This work ensures AGU is perceived as a reliable, authoritative and valuable source of high-quality Earth and space science information, while also increasing public awareness and appreciation of the Earth and space sciences and their implications for society and the environment.

The Senior Specialist/Writer, Public Information is primarily responsible for finding and publicizing the most newsworthy scientific papers coming out in AGU journals and presented at AGU meetings, recruiting and working closely with interns to find and write up new scientific findings for a lay audience, and monitoring and reporting on media coverage of AGU science to AGU staff and membership.

This position works closely with other members of AGU’s public information team and other AGU colleagues to collaborate on media relations; organize press conferences, events and activities at AGU meetings; and execute other public information programs and activities, as needed, including special projects and ad-hoc assignments.

Specifically, this position:
* Promotes AGU science by finding newsworthy scientific findings published in AGU journals and presented at AGU meetings; publicizes these findings through engaging and accurate press releases, blog posts, social media posts and other avenues under tight deadlines. Includes working with partner organizations and institutions to publicize newsworthy scientific research published in AGU journals and presented at AGU meetings.
* Manages publicity of AGU research through interactions with AGU journal staff and by maintaining a running log of papers in the publicity pipeline; recruits, edits and guides science-writing interns in finding and reporting on newsworthy scientific research; and organizes and oversees blogging by AGU staff and guest contributors.
* Participates in experiments to promote and deliver new findings reported in AGU papers and at AGU meetings in innovative ways. For instance: producing and/or incorporating video and animations; devising new kinds of targeted media advisories; utilizing Google+ hangouts, Reddit AMAs and other social networking vehicles to connect AGU scientists with the press and public; and so on.
* Collaborates with other members of the public information team to facilitate press operations and media relations, and organize and conduct press conferences and press-related events at AGU meetings and in other settings. Includes working with partner organizations and institutions to publicize newsworthy scientific research presented at AGU meetings.
* Monitors and reports on media coverage of AGU science to AGU staff and AGU’s membership. Maintains and improves AGU’s media contact database and media monitoring capabilities through tools such as Cision or Vocus.
* Supports AGU’s social media efforts through publicizing of newsworthy research via Twitter, Facebook, and other social media channels. Plays a key role on the social media scrum team, which looks for innovative ways to engage AGU members, the Earth and space science community and the public on social media.
* Other duties as assigned.

What the Senior Specialist/Writer brings to the team
* Bachelor’s degree in journalism, science, or related discipline with 4-5 years of science writing experience.
* Training in science communications and/or journalism highly desired.
* Adept at assessing the newsworthiness of scientific findings.
* Excellent verbal, writing and editing skills, including experience interviewing researchers, translating complex science into simple concepts and writing about scientific results in an engaging, accurate way for the general public.
* Experience writing official science press releases issued by a public information office and/or stories about scientific research that were published in news media outlets.
* Experience with social media platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn and Instagram.
* Demonstrated professional experience and/or enthusiasm for blogging, and producing audio and/or video science communication for the public is a plus.
* Ability to communicate easily and effectively with scientists and researchers, as well as AGU staff and leaders, in both public and private settings.
* Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work cooperatively with others.
* Strong time management and organizational skills, as well as attention to detail and ability to manage complex logistics.
* Skilled networker and recruiter; adept at quickly establishing relationships with members of the press, public information officers at partner organizations and institutions, guest bloggers and potential science writing interns.
* Familiarity with organizing press conferences for scientific meetings, and working with scientists on disseminating scientific findings via press conferences preferred.
* Highly motivated with the ability to work independently.
* Knowledge of writing and publishing software, such as Microsoft Word and Word Press, as well as e-mail and Microsoft Excel.
* Knowledge of news media monitoring systems, such as Cision or Vocus is a plus.
* Ability to travel
