What the Manager, Design and Branding does
The Manager, Design and Branding position is key in assisting AGU to promote discovery in Earth and Space science for the benefit of humanity by being strategic and operational in focus. The primary purpose of this role is to lead creative efforts and oversee design and execution across all AGU programs and services, and to develop and maintain AGU’s visual identity and brand. Reporting to Assistant Director, Strategic Communication & Marketing, the Manager, Design and Branding collaborates regularly with the Managers of Marketing and Strategic Communications.
* Develops and maintains design approaches that reflect AGU’s brand and serve the needs of diverse programs and their stakeholders.
* Supervises and mentors two staff designers as well as freelance designers and artists as needed.
* Leads the team in the development and selection of design strategies, and supervises the development of creative briefs to support marketing campaigns and projects.
* Works as an active senior member of the team, contributing to a variety of projects and managing their own portfolio of design projects.
* Collaborates regularly with the managers of marketing and strategic communications, as well as the editor in chief of Eos, and serves as member of AGU’s Editorial Center - which develops, coordinates and plans content across AGU digital platforms and communications channels, specifically the news website and the Eos magazine,, marketing campaigns, the video program, and social media.
* Oversees AGU’s digital assets, including the photography acquisition program and serves as the organization’s rights and permissions subject matter expert.
* Responsible for reviewing and updating AGU’s brand standards and style guide, as needed.
* Manages a design budget and vendor contracts.
* Other duties as assigned.

What the Manager, Design and Branding brings to the team
* 8+ years of design experience in a media, publishing organization or design firm or agency with a Bachelor’s Degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
* 5+ years in a lead design role and 3 years in a supervisory or management role with demonstrated success developing staff.
* Experience in news production strongly preferred.
* Experience in a scientific, knowledge-based or technical setting is a plus, but not required.
* Demonstrated ability to convey complex ideas through imagery and design, and to support the achievement of key marketing and communications goals through thoughtful and deliberate creative choices.
* Superior skill in managing and mentoring design staff, and educating colleagues about design and branding.
* Strong verbal and written communications skills, and superior interpersonal skills; ability to communicate and interact easily and effectively with staff, AGU leaders, freelancers, vendors, scientists, and researchers.
* Record of success serving as an internal and/or external client liaison: including helping clients to clarify goals and objectives, and developing creative briefs, design concepts and comps - for both digital and print.
* Excellent organizational and project management skills, including the ability to identify process inefficiencies and develop solutions, and to manage multiple complex projects at the same time on a tight deadline.
* Strong attention to detail a must.
* Proven knowledge of imagery archiving and photography taxonomy, as well as rights and permissions management.
* Strong track record of building and maintaining relationships with printing and other vendors.
* Demonstrated proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign, Illustrator and Acrobat, as well as Photoshop and the Microsoft suite of products.
* Ability to create and manage a budget.
* High degree of professionalism and accuracy.
* Demonstrated discretion on confidential matters
